Geometry is inclusive

 Geometry is inclusive

Today I would like to talk about teaching geometry to students with special needs. Along with the years, education has been able to develop resources that help students with diversity to keep up with the rest of their classmates.

For this reason, I consider it is more than important to learn some adaptation that we might introduce in our geometry lessons in order to be equitable and respectful with all the students.

There are different ways of capturing and representing geometry objects. It is when we face a new situation we all mostly use our visual skills to identify that object or situation, therefore, these new images are progressively adapting in our brain until they form a real image.

For students that might have some issues with this visual problem, there is a programme called Frostig which provides 25 activities to work and develop visual-motor skills, shape and background perception, the position on the space, space relationships and visual memory.

In this video you will see how to apply Frostig’s test:

Working geometry with students with Visual Disability

For these students that present these difficulties, working geometry and mathematical concepts might be a real challenge. First of all, I would like you to watch this video in order to see their reality: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYb2jm-SWMM

This girl shows a great motivation for learning and it is something that we should foster in our classrooms no matter the necessity of our students.

It is relevant to introduce the “ háptico” system which entails touch and synesthesia. It is the perception of balance and all parts of the body in order to work this subject therefore, it allows the shape and forms capture.

Other resources we can use with these students are the following ones:

Engraving: This could engrave information thanks to the Perkins machine. Also, we can work with geometric shapes by using this machine.

Geometric- algebraic expressions: For this action, we must use the transcription rules of Braille with the use of expressions and transformations.

In this video, you will find some tips to use with your students: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXdDBAHh3eM

Moreover, the Braille system allows students to work geometry through the machine called “positive point” which allows them to work with different types of angles. For the denomination of geometry figures and the different polygons, we can use specific symbols along with the enumeration of its vertex.

Geoplane and handmade materials.

The use of the Tangram is also a great element to introduce in your class. It gives your students the freedom to manipulate geometric shapes.

Moreover, we can use plastics and wood geometric figures.

Finally, I would  like to share this speech in which a teacher talks about how to work with students with special needs:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nEihYAqR84

Welcome!

WELCOME!  Hello you! I'm Clara María and this is my blog Discovering the different faces of Geometry. First of all, I would like to tell you what my blog is going to be about. The first thing is that in this blog you will discover how geometry takes part in our daily life, however, I will like to focus on different disciplines that involve as many subjects as you can imagine and also in some aspects that you have never thought you could find geometry.  My aim is to share with you not only information but also resources that we can use together in order to create motivating and interesting geometry lessons.  This is the beginning of  I hope a great journey. I warm you if you are not an open-minded person and don't want to change your mind about this theme, please give it a try you won't regret it.  Are you ready?

Discovering Sacred Geometry

Today, we are going to talk about one topic which is more than an essential part of the yoga discipline, I’m talking about Sacred Geometry. Why is this topic related to this discipline? Well, I will tell you that thanks to this geometry system, we are able to achieve a state of calm and peace that is part of one of the multiples of the benefits that yoga provides us. But, let's first introduce this term and discover what is behind it. Sacred geometry can be defined as a collection of geometric shapes and specific geometry proportions. It is related to the belief that God is the geometer of the world. This geometry has been used in many religious constructions, for instance, churches, altars or mosques. It is remarkable to say that we all take part in this geometry since our brains are the main protagonist of its development. Sacred Geometry, allows that both hemispheres connect between each other, the left and the right part, helping us to achieve our objective since we could be ab

Technology and Geometry

Technology and Geometry Mathematics has always been a subject that was absolutely necessary for the continuous development of workouts. Despite these workouts have always been developed in a traditional way, paper and pencil , nowadays we are able to find many different resources that allow students to carry out these exercises but from a more didactic way.  Geometry is a field of mathematics in which students study the characteristics of the figures in a plane or space. Its definition seems to be quite abstract for students, therefore, it is one of the most difficult subjects for students. Nevertheless, we are lucky to have the chance to use technology resources that make it easier for students to understand this subject.  How important are technology resources in geometric lessons? Technology allows learners to see and interact with geometric concepts. They can explore and search through games, simulations and digital tools. As a matter of fact, technology provides students with the
