Geometry in ceramic creations

Geometry and ceramic? does it exist?

As we have seen in previous posts of this blog, geometry is not an isolated subject. Indeed, it is connected transversely with many other themes and subjects. We saw that geometry was established in many paintings of the renaissance, but can it be connected with other parts of art?

Geometry is for many artists the key point on their creations, for instance, today we will see the connection of geometry with ceramics.

What does ceramic mean?

Ceramic is the art or technique of making objects from clay and pottery of all qualities and types.

It is not a new activity that has been published on Instagram, it is an old technique created many years ago, for instance, the Greeks were very well known because of their creations.

In addition, there was a ceramic style called Geometric Ceramic that consisted of the creation of glasses in old Greek. It was created in Athens, but thanks to their great marine skills they expanded this style.

Nowadays, we can still find a strong connection between geometry and ceramics. For instance, the artist Joris Link.

His ceramic creations are compounds of different shapes and structures. He usually repeats the same elements depending on the space, moreover, he tends to create what is similar to a mosaic with those figures.

In this video, he shows the way he works with porcelain:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15rw9oastlo

He gets inspiration from the imagination, but also he tends to connect with his daily and natural elements. Link creates ceramic from mathematics, nature, molecules and landscapes. He doesn’t create any new shapes but he plays with those ones that already exist.

Another relevant artist is Rhian Malin

This artist follows a family tradition that consists of introducing geometric elements to their figures. The principal colour is blue and many of the geometric figures are repeated several times

Not many years ago there was a famous exposition created by the foundation COAM Architecture in Madrid. This exposition gathered the different creations that have had as a guide the geometry. This exposition had five different categories that attended to different geometric shapes ( folded, waving, three-dimensional).

This collection shows how geometry influences different constructive, spatial and formal aspects depending on how the ceramic piece has been projected.

In order to implement this material in your lessons, you might ask your students to create different geometry shapes by using ceramic. Here there is a simple example of how can you do it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVwt8NiXEag

Welcome!

WELCOME!  Hello you! I'm Clara María and this is my blog Discovering the different faces of Geometry. First of all, I would like to tell you what my blog is going to be about. The first thing is that in this blog you will discover how geometry takes part in our daily life, however, I will like to focus on different disciplines that involve as many subjects as you can imagine and also in some aspects that you have never thought you could find geometry.  My aim is to share with you not only information but also resources that we can use together in order to create motivating and interesting geometry lessons.  This is the beginning of  I hope a great journey. I warm you if you are not an open-minded person and don't want to change your mind about this theme, please give it a try you won't regret it.  Are you ready?

Discovering Sacred Geometry

Today, we are going to talk about one topic which is more than an essential part of the yoga discipline, I’m talking about Sacred Geometry. Why is this topic related to this discipline? Well, I will tell you that thanks to this geometry system, we are able to achieve a state of calm and peace that is part of one of the multiples of the benefits that yoga provides us. But, let's first introduce this term and discover what is behind it. Sacred geometry can be defined as a collection of geometric shapes and specific geometry proportions. It is related to the belief that God is the geometer of the world. This geometry has been used in many religious constructions, for instance, churches, altars or mosques. It is remarkable to say that we all take part in this geometry since our brains are the main protagonist of its development. Sacred Geometry, allows that both hemispheres connect between each other, the left and the right part, helping us to achieve our objective since we could be ab

Technology and Geometry

Technology and Geometry Mathematics has always been a subject that was absolutely necessary for the continuous development of workouts. Despite these workouts have always been developed in a traditional way, paper and pencil , nowadays we are able to find many different resources that allow students to carry out these exercises but from a more didactic way.  Geometry is a field of mathematics in which students study the characteristics of the figures in a plane or space. Its definition seems to be quite abstract for students, therefore, it is one of the most difficult subjects for students. Nevertheless, we are lucky to have the chance to use technology resources that make it easier for students to understand this subject.  How important are technology resources in geometric lessons? Technology allows learners to see and interact with geometric concepts. They can explore and search through games, simulations and digital tools. As a matter of fact, technology provides students with the
